What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is performed by a translator authorized by Kammarkollegiet, the Swedish authority that authorizes translators. The translation has the same legal validity as the original document and is accepted by Swedish authorities, embassies and foreign organizations.

A certified translation is provided with the translator's stamp, signature and a statement that the translation is correct. This is what gives the translation its status as an official document.

Certified translations are often required by:

  • the Swedish Migration Agency, Tax Agency and other Swedish authorities
  • universities and colleges (for foreign diplomas)
  • employers assessing foreign qualifications
  • foreign embassies, authorities and universities
  • banks, insurance companies and legal representatives

When do you need to translate documents?

Translation may be needed in many situations where a document in one language is to be used by someone who doesn't speak that language. Certified translation is required when the document is to be used officially.

Common situations:

  • you are studying at a foreign university
  • you have foreign qualifications to be assessed in Sweden
  • you are getting married or confirming civil status abroad
  • you are working abroad or applying for a residence permit
  • a company is using documents in another country

Certified translation vs regular translation

There is an important difference between a regular translation and a certified translation. For official purposes the translation must be certified.

Certified translation

  • performed by a translator authorized by Kammarkollegiet
  • legally valid and accepted by authorities
  • carries the translator's stamp and statement
  • can be used together with legalization
  • suitable for official documents

Regular translation

  • can be performed by anyone
  • has no legal validity
  • not accepted by authorities
  • works for internal or informal use
  • cheaper but not officially valid

How it works

1

2

Get a quote

We normally get back to you within the same business day with price and delivery time based on the document's length, language combination and complexity.

3

Certified translation

A translator authorized by Kammarkollegiet performs the work. You receive a legally valid translation with the translator's stamp and statement.

4

Delivery

You receive your translation both digitally and physically. If needed, we can also handle further legalization or send directly to the recipient.

Translation + legalization

Many documents need to be both translated and legalized before they can be used abroad. DOX handles the entire chain: certified translation, Notary Public, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and embassy legalization.

It is often most efficient to handle translation and legalization in parallel or in the right order to avoid double steps and delays. We recommend that you contact us first so we can advise on the best flow for your specific document and receiving country.

Common countries we help with combined translation + legalization:

How long does a translation take?

Standard delivery is 3–5 business days for most documents. Time depends on the document's length, language combination, any subsequent legalization and translator availability.

For urgent matters we offer express translation — contact us before ordering and we'll check what's possible for your specific document.
