Do Swedish citizens need a Thailand visa?

Swedish citizens do NOT need a visa for tourist trips up to 60 days — a passport valid at least 6 months past entry plus a confirmed onward ticket is sufficient.

For trips LONGER than 60 days, or if you intend to work, study, retire or live long-term in Thailand, you must apply for a visa before departure at the Royal Thai Embassy in Stockholm.

DOX handles all types of Thailand visa: tourist visa (TR), retirement visa (Non-Immigrant O-A), work visa (Non-Immigrant B), education visa (Non-Immigrant ED), business travel and the new DTV for digital nomads.

Visa-free stay — 60 days

Since July 2024 Thailand grants Swedish citizens 60 visa-free days (previously 30). This covers most tourist trips, but the following requirements apply:

  • passport valid at least 6 months past entry date
  • at least two empty pages in the passport
  • confirmed onward or return ticket within 60 days
  • sufficient funds for the stay (10,000 THB/person or 20,000/family may be requested)
  • no work activity — tourism, holiday, family/friend visits only

💡 Want to stay longer than 60 days? You can extend your visa-free stay by 30 days locally at the Immigration Bureau (about 1,900 THB) — or apply for a Tourist Visa (TR) that grants up to 60 + 30 days from the start.

Retirement Visa to Thailand (Non-Immigrant O-A)

Non-Immigrant O-A ("Long Stay") is the most popular visa for Swedish retirees who want to spend extended time in Thailand. The visa is valid for 1 year, allows multiple entries and can be renewed annually.

Retirement visa requirements:

  • at least 50 years old
  • pension or monthly income of at least 65,000 THB (~$1,800) OR assets of at least 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account
  • criminal record extract (no older than 3 months, apostilled)
  • medical certificate in English (no tuberculosis, leprosy, drug addiction, alcoholism)
  • travel insurance with medical coverage min. $100,000 USD (or equivalent Thai health insurance)
  • passport valid at least 18 months
  • pension payment proof (Försäkringskassan/Pensionsmyndigheten/occupational)

DOX handles the entire application: we verify your pension/assets meet requirements, arrange apostille on the criminal record, coordinate the medical certificate, review your insurance and submit at the embassy. You only need to send in your documents — we handle the rest.
