You need an ETA, not a traditional visa

The UK left the Schengen Area after Brexit, and since 2 April 2025 it requires an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) from all Swedish citizens before entry. It's a digital travel authorisation linked to your passport — not a visa.

A UK ETA is valid for 2 years, allows multiple entries, and covers stays up to 6 months at a time (tourism, business meetings, short studies). For work, long-term studies or settlement you need a separate visa.

💡 Common confusion: searching for "visa to England" when an ETA is what's actually required. We help you choose the right option — get in touch if unsure.

What applies to Swedish citizens?

As a Swedish citizen you need a UK ETA for short tourist trips to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This applies to stays up to 6 months at a time — for tourism, family visits, business meetings or short courses.

The ETA application is digital and requires your passport, a recent photo and a few questions about your trip. Processing time is usually under 72 hours but can vary. We recommend applying well before your trip.

If you're from a country outside the EU/Schengen Area, or planning to work/study/live in the UK, different rules apply — typically a Standard Visitor Visa or work visa. Contact us and we'll help you choose the right one.

Passport validity — what applies for travel to the UK?

A common question: how long must a passport be valid for entry to the United Kingdom? The rules are simpler than many think — the UK does NOT have the same 6-month rule as Schengen countries.

Your passport needs to be valid for the duration of your stay — neither more nor less. If you arrive on 1 August and leave on 14 August, it's enough that your passport is valid up to 14 August.

Passport requirements for UK entry

  • Passport must be valid for the entire trip (no 6-month rule like in Schengen)
  • Must be a biometric passport (e-passport) to use automated e-gates
  • Emergency passports are accepted but may require manual border checks
  • For UK ETA: the passport you apply with MUST be the same passport you travel with — the ETA is linked to the passport number
  • Tip: renew your passport before applying for the ETA if it expires soon, otherwise you'll need to reapply

Travelling to London, Edinburgh or elsewhere in the UK?

The same ETA applies whether you're travelling to London, Manchester, Edinburgh or the countryside. Here are the most popular destinations among our clients.

London

England's capital. Big Ben, Tower of London, museums, theatre, shopping. ETA required for all tourist trips since 2025.

Edinburgh

Scotland's capital. Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile, Festival Fringe in August. Same ETA as for England.

Manchester

The UK's cultural and industrial heart. Football, music, Northern Quarter. Easy reach from London by train.

Oxford & Cambridge

Live, work or study in the UK — which visa?

An ETA only covers visits up to 6 months at a time and grants no right to work or study long-term. If you're moving to, working in, or studying in the UK you'll need a separate visa from the Home Office. Here are the most common routes for Swedish citizens post-Brexit.

Work

Skilled Worker Visa (Tier 2)

For job offers from a UK employer with a Home Office sponsor licence. Minimum salary (usually £38,700/year from 2024) and skill level RQF 3+ required. Valid up to 5 years, renewable and a route to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years.

Study

Student Visa

For studies longer than 11 months at a licensed UK school/university (CAS letter required). Allows part-time work (up to 20 h/week during term). Family members may join on a Dependent Visa in some cases.

Family

Family Visa (Spouse / Partner)

For living with a British citizen or settled person. Requires proof of relationship, financial self-sufficiency (£29,000/year sponsor income) and English language ability. Valid 2.5 years at a time, leads to ILR after 5 years.

Family origin

UK Ancestry Visa

Unique route for Commonwealth citizens with a grandparent born in the UK — doesn't apply to Swedes directly, but relevant for Swedes with dual citizenship (e.g. British/Australian). 5 years, leads to ILR.

Graduate

High Potential Individual (HPI)

For recent graduates (within 5 years) from selected global top-50 universities. No sponsor required. Valid 2 years (3 for PhDs). A good bridge if you want to job-hunt in the UK without already being employed.

Entrepreneur

Innovator Founder Visa

For entrepreneurs with an innovative, scalable business idea approved by an endorsing body. No minimum investment requirement (since 2023). Valid 3 years, leads to ILR after 3 years on meeting milestones.
