What is a Certificate of Origin?
A Certificate of Origin (COO) is an official document certifying in which country goods were manufactured or underwent their last substantial transformation. It is issued by the Chamber of Commerce and is required for export to many countries outside the EU.
Customs authorities in the importing country use the Certificate of Origin to determine customs duties, check import restrictions, and verify that goods comply with trade agreements between countries.
There are two types of origin: wholly obtained goods (e.g., raw materials extracted in Sweden) and goods that have undergone last substantial transformation in a country (e.g., assembly or processing that substantially changes the product).

Frequently asked questions about Certificate of Origin
What is a Certificate of Origin (COO)?
A Certificate of Origin (COO) is an official document certifying in which country goods were manufactured or underwent their last substantial transformation. It is issued by the Chamber of Commerce and is often required for export outside the EU.
What is the difference between preferential and non-preferential origin?
Non-preferential origin (like COO) states the actual country of origin and is used for customs statistics and trade restrictions. Preferential origin (e.g., EUR.1) provides customs benefits under trade agreements. The Chamber of Commerce issues non-preferential Certificates of Origin.
How long does it take to get a Certificate of Origin?
Processing time is normally 1–3 business days after all documents have been submitted and approved. We also offer express service for urgent matters.
Can I get the Certificate of Origin digitally?
Yes, with the DIY option you receive an electronically certified Certificate of Origin that you can print yourself. If the recipient requires a physical original with stamp, we recommend Full Service.
Do I need to be a member of the Chamber of Commerce?
No, you don't need to be a member. We handle the application for you through our membership with the Chamber of Commerce, giving you access to favorable prices without needing to become a member yourself.
What happens if the origin is incorrect?
Incorrectly stated origin can lead to customs problems, fines, and delayed deliveries in the importing country. That's why we always carefully review your documents before application to ensure the origin is correctly documented.
