Certified translation vs regular translation
There is an important difference between a regular translation and a certified translation. For official purposes the translation must be certified.

Translation + legalization
Many documents need to be both translated and legalized before they can be used abroad. DOX handles the entire chain: certified translation, Notary Public, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and embassy legalization.

What makes an authorised translator unique?
An authorised translator has passed the authorisation exam set by Kammarkollegiet (the Swedish Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency) — a rigorous multi-hour test with strict demands on terminological precision, legal accuracy and linguistic skill in both translation directions. Only a fraction of applicants pass. The authorisation is personal, time-limited and must be renewed regularly.
When an authorised translator signs a translation they certify — with legal liability — that it is faithful to the original. It receives an official stamp and signature accepted by courts, the Migration Agency, the Tax Agency, universities, banks and foreign authorities. An ordinary (non-authorised) translation lacks this status and is usually rejected outright for official matters.
Kammarkollegiet maintains a public register of authorised translators. Every DOX translation is performed by someone on that register — you can verify their credentials at kammarkollegiet.se.
When is an authorised translation legally required?
There is a widespread misconception that "all official translations" must be authorised. In practice it is the recipient of the document who sets the requirement — not the sender. Here are the most common situations where an authorised translation is mandatory:
- ✓Migration Agency matters (residence permits, citizenship, family reunification, asylum) — all foreign documents must be authorised-translated into Swedish.
- ✓Admission to Swedish universities — foreign degree certificates require an authorised translation to be assessed by UHR (the Swedish Council for Higher Education).
- ✓Court proceedings — all foreign evidence and documents cited in a Swedish court must be authorised-translated.
- ✓Estate inventories and inheritance matters — the Tax Agency requires authorised translations of foreign wills, prenuptial agreements and death certificates.
- ✓Property transfers — foreign powers of attorney, marriage certificates and estate inventories for property matters at the Land Registry and banks.
- ✓Use abroad — when Swedish documents are to be used by foreign authorities, universities or employers. A subsequent apostille or embassy legalisation is usually also required.
In informal contexts (a CV for a manager, sharing grades internally) an informal translation is usually enough. If you are unsure — ask the recipient first, or choose authorised to be safe. Re-translating later costs more than paying a little more from the start.
